I think that on the one hand Frank did not want to go to see the play because the actors working in it were amateurs . However, it sounds like an excuse for me for I believe Frank might have started feeling attracted towards Rita and he really enjoys her company, therefore going out together might cause him to fell more involved than in a teacher- student relationship.
From the educational point of view, this reflects the prejudices we might have against certain student. At times teachers just label students without seeing beyond their school life causing them frustration and anger, making their own job even more difficult. Although it is not an easy taks, we should be able to accompany each student individually, see their needs and different capacities and then teach and evaluate accordingly...

Does the fact that the actors were amateurs mean they were necessarily to perform badly, Silvia? What might this be telling us about Frank?
I see your point about Frank's possible attraction towards Rita, but then, why does he insist on their going to the pub together instead?
Love,
Gladys
I think this tells us that he has prejudices against these non professional actors.
On the other hand I guess he does not want to see that play and might want to spend that time talking to Rita and drinking.
Good observation about Frank's (inferred) prejudices, Silvia!
Now, we've been hearing Rita whining about her husband's prejudices against "educated people" from the very beginning... What is the author telling us now about these "learned guys" (represented here by Frank)?
Keep in touch!
Gladys
I guess the point as I've mentioned before is to be able to see beyond!!!!
We have prejudices when we really do not take the job to study and analize things. Frank descarted the amateur play without giving a chance to see and then have a proper opinion.
Sometimes in education, students are just labelled and teachers do not give them a chance or do not bother to see what's beyoind their academic work...
