I totally agree on this matter of taking a decision being aware that we are not only doing so but also accepting the consequences of it. However, when it comes to this broad issue of considering a person as ¨good or bad¨, Savater explains in his point of view, that nobody can tell whether a person is good or not. He says a human being can be good at something or doing something but he makes a point in that as it is not known what human beings are for, it is difficult to determine who acts well or not. I personally do not agree with him or at least I do not agree with what I understood from this chapter. He does not take into account religious matters, so that those who follow a religioius doctrine: are or not included when he says that it is not known what human beings are for? As far as I am concerned, those who believe in God and have a faithful life have some clear ideas of what is ¨good or bad¨to do as a human being.

Dear MatVic: I've noticed one difference between what Savater says at first (according to your own words), and what you discuss in your conclusion. You end up saying "at least for religious people, it's easy to decide what's a good or bad action". Leaving alone the fact that, at least in my experience, these clear taxonomies frequently blur as soon as you try to put them into practice (as we do not often do actions in isolation, and motives as well as options play a crucial role here) one thing is to say an action is bad, and a very different one is to say "the doer is bad". And, according to your own very words, this was Savater's main point.
NLP teaches us a person is not the same as their behaviour (sounds obvious in black and white, doesn't it? ;-)!). Yet, how often do we still mingle these two concepts?
Let me know what you think!
Fondly,
Gladys
I do not agree, a perdon and their behaviour are the same. Your actions tell a lot about you.
To me, what Savater says is that we can not agree on what the human beings are 'used' for, their function and that's why we cannot distinguised an universal good or bad.
However, the act of choosing is freedom in itself even if the choices are not the right ones. We need to consider the importance of being free as well as taking the best desition possible.
LoL

Have you ever thought that although many people do "the same thing", yet they're all different, Silvia? I do agree with you that our actions tell a lot about ourselves, yet would hesitate to support the notion that "we are our behaviour" (not that you need to agree with me, mind you!). And one action does not mean exactly the same as "our behaviour", does it?
Thanks for allowing me to speak my mind in your blog!
Gladys
